BRICS countries held a special meeting of the Economic and Trade Liaison Group at the department level, calling for joint resistance to unilateralism and trade protectionism

On May 12, Brazil, the BRICS chair, organized a special video conference at the departmental level of the Economic and Trade Liaison Group to conduct in-depth dialogue on supporting the multilateral trading system and jointly resisting unilateralism and trade protectionism amid the global trade tensions caused by the United States' unilateral "reciprocal tariffs."

China stated at the meeting that the so-called "reciprocal tariff" policy recently introduced by the United States not only violates the basic principles of the WTO and undermines the multilateral trading system, but also seriously infringes on the legitimate rights and interests of all countries, especially depriving developing countries of their basic right to development. China is willing to work with BRICS members to jointly respond to the impact of the unilateral measures of the United States on the global trade order, support the multilateral trading system and free trade, and inject more positive energy and certainty into global development. China calls on BRICS countries to restrain the use of trade restrictions under the current situation, facilitate economic and trade cooperation, and create more benefits for enterprises and people of all parties.

Many BRICS members expressed serious concerns about unilateral measures such as "reciprocal tariffs", believing that such measures will have a serious negative impact on the world economy and international trade, and will especially have a strong impact on the development of countries in the "global South". They called on BRICS countries to work together to cope with the current global trade tensions, support the BRICS Economic and Trade Ministers' Meeting to strengthen position coordination, give full play to the role of the WTO platform, make a common voice on maintaining the multilateral trading system and opposing unilateralism and protectionism, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries with practical actions.
