Mexico: US raises steel and aluminum tariffs, says it's unfair and has no legal basis

On June 4, local time, Mexican President Sheinbaum said that the US announcement of raising steel and aluminum tariffs was an "unfair measure" with no legal basis because there is a trade agreement between Mexico and the United States.

Sheinbaum announced that he would hold a meeting with the National Steel and Aluminum Chamber of Commerce that day, and Economy Minister Ebrard would also meet with the US Secretary of Commerce.

Sheinbaum said that if an agreement cannot be reached with the United States, countermeasures will be taken.

On June 3, local time, the White House issued a statement saying that US President Trump announced that the tariff on imported steel and aluminum and their derivatives would be increased from 25% to 50%. The tariff policy will take effect at 00:01 a.m. on June 4, 2025, Eastern Time. (Reporters Ma Tianjing and Sheng Jiadi)
